People-Powered Philanthropy: Collective Impact in Action

Philanthropy with Faith is a space for APF’s Managing Director & Head of Philanthropy to share insights on the evolving landscape of fundraising and charitable giving, updates to APF initiatives, and explore how psychology and philanthropy work together to create a world where people are healthy, happy, and living with dignity.

People-Powered Philanthropy
When most people hear the word “philanthropy,” they picture someone in a mahogany paneled office signing a check with a fountain pen while wearing a monocle. Okay, maybe not the monocle, but you get the idea: we often think about philanthropy in terms of the financial heavy lifting.

Don’t get me wrong, our donors and financial partners are the vital engine that power our work at APF. Their support makes it possible to fund innovative research, build the future of psychology, and drive work that improves lives and communities. Without our donors, we’d have plenty of great ideas and no way to bring them to life.

The reality is: Funding only tells half the story when it comes to meaningful philanthropy.

At APF, our philosophy of philanthropy is a bit non-traditional – we see it as something much bigger and much more human. Philanthropy doesn’t move on money alone; it moves through the power of our people. People who dedicate their time, expertise, energy, and passion to making an impact.

Philanthropy Takes a Village
You know how people say “it takes a village” to raise a child? At APF, we’ve found that it also takes a village to create meaningful, lasting change in the world.

Funding is what makes our work possible. The people who believe in the power of psychology and contribute financial resources to APF enable our work to exist, but it’s the community that brings those ideas to life. Think of it like this: money can buy high-quality ingredients, but you still need a team of talented chefs to get dinner on the table.

Change doesn’t happen in isolation. Real, lasting change happens through collective effort. It’s driven by people who contribute their time, expertise, lived experience, and that “let’s do this” energy toward a shared purpose. This reflects something we know well in psychology and embrace in our work at APF: Psychology moves people, and people move the world.

This belief is also why we embrace Trust-Based Philanthropy. We believe that philanthropy is relational, not transactional. Rather than simply funding research projects, we strive to invest in people, trust the expertise of our community, and support those already doing important work on the ground.

APF’s Philanthropic Village
People and community are what powers truly impactful philanthropy. The work we’re able to accomplish is built, sustained, and amplified by an entire network of dedicated people behind the scenes, whether in the form of funding, leadership, advocacy, or service:

  • The Board of Trustees: Our strategic captains keeping the ship on course, focused, and ensuring accountability to our mission.
  • The Donors: Our financial foundation, providing the funding necessary to innovate and maximize impact.
  • The Dedicated APF Team: The people keeping day-to-day operations running smoothly, while moving our mission and vision forward.
  • The Volunteers: Our unsung heroes! Our volunteer committee members lend their expertise to help us build the greatest impact across the field. Additionally, our volunteer reviewers spend hours reviewing applications and evaluating proposals – this peer-review process is a best practice that ensures equity and transparency in how financial resources are distributed.

Turning Goals into Reality
It truly takes every member of APF’s village to turn our mission into real-world impact. Philanthropic best practices tell us that the most effective organizations are those that listen to their community, and at APF, we take this seriously.

Whether you’re donating your coffee money, or spending your Saturday morning advocating for the power of psychology, you are part of the village moving the field (and the world) forward.

By prioritizing impact, collaboration, and community, we ensure that every hour volunteered and every dollar donated actually moves the needle on the issues that matter most.

There’s A Place for You

Making a difference doesn’t require a formal title or a major commitment, and there are so many ways to be a part of APF’s work.

You might be a donor, or serve as a reviewer, board member, or committee volunteer. Or your role might be simpler (but just as meaningful): sharing resources, attending APF events, or advocating for psychology and science in your daily life. Every form of engagement makes a difference in building our community and advancing our mission.

Ready to join us? There’s a place for everyone in our village. Get involved and Direct your Action with us. We promise it’s worth it!
